Zelensky says Russia plans 300,000 more troops after mid-September vote
Zelensky said Russia’s overall troop goal could reach 500,000 by 2027, while he also claimed Ukraine and Russia will each hold equal territory gains and losses in 2026.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia is planning to draft an additional 300,000 troops for its war effort after Russian parliamentary elections in mid-September, according to comments released Sunday by Ukraine.
Zelensky said the wider aim could involve reaching an overall goal of 500,000 by 2027, describing it as a form of peripheral mobilization targeting Russia’s far flung regions, and he said Moscow would likely struggle to keep such plans hidden.
He pointed to fighting around Kostiantynivka and said Russia is losing a maximum amount of troops in its push to advance into Ukraine’s so called fortress belt of eastern cities, Reuters reported.
Zelensky also hailed recent gains by Ukrainian forces in southeastern Ukraine, adding that the amount of territory occupied by Russia and liberated by Ukrainian troops in 2026 would be equal.
