CrossCountry cancels most UK train routes after Birmingham power cut

The operator said tickets for Sunday travel can be used with other train companies on the same route, and CrossCountry services accepting delays of 30 minutes or more may qualify for delay repay compensation.

CrossCountry cancelled almost all of its Great Britain train services after a power cut in Birmingham hit its control centre on Sunday, with most routes suspended until further notice, including services between Glasgow and Edinburgh, Manchester and Birmingham, Cheltenham and Cardiff, and Newcastle and Edinburgh, according to the Guardian Business.

The company expected a near normal service between Peterborough, Cambridge and Stansted Airport, and said a planned rail replacement bus service was running between Leicester and Peterborough.

Britain's transport secretary, Heidi Alexander, said she was concerned about the outage and asked publicly owned operators to add extra services where possible. She added that Network Rail power teams were onsite to restore power and systems as soon as possible.

CrossCountry said tickets for its Sunday services could be used with other operators on the same route and would remain valid on CrossCountry services until Wednesday, August 26. It also noted that passengers are entitled to delay repay compensation if their train is delayed by 30 minutes or more, or refunds if they choose not to travel, and the operator referenced prior performance issues highlighted by Transport Focus.
