Bessent could use nearly $1 trillion Treasury General Account for buybacks
The proposal would give the Treasury additional capacity to affect long term bond yields by using the Treasury General Account for buyback funding, according to sources cited by CNBC.
CNBC Markets, CNBC World, and CNBC Economy reported that Treasury Secretary nominee Scott Bessent could look to tap nearly $1 trillion in the Treasury General Account to help fund bond buybacks.
The outlets said the use of the Treasury General Account would provide the Treasury with additional firepower to influence long term bond yields.
The reports relied on unnamed sources and did not provide further details on timing or the size of any planned buyback program.
