Indian food safety commissioner suspends permits at Domino’s and Pizza Hut

The Maharashtra official, who took over as food safety chief in May, said his regulator will act against outlets that do not comply.

Reuters reports that Tukaram Mundhe, a state food safety commissioner in Maharashtra, has carried out raids in Mumbai aimed at poor hygiene and unsafe food, a crackdown that has drawn national attention.

SCMP Economy and Reuters describe Mundhe as having suspended food permits for four Domino’s outlets and one Pizza Hut outlet in recent weeks.

Reuters adds that his teams have carried out more than 3,000 raids since he began the role in May, targeting cricket clubs, hotels, and well-known restaurants, and also inspecting court canteens after a judge raised questions.

In a Reuters interview, Mundhe said outlets that do not comply will face what regulators expect.
