Indonesia grants Malaysia airspace access for cloud seeding against haze
The two countries are also preparing coordinated firefighting and fire prevention programs ahead of national holidays, including Malaysia Day on Sept. 16 in Sarawak.
Indonesia has given Malaysian agencies official permission to enter its airspace to conduct cloud seeding operations to combat regional haze, Malaysia’s environment minister said, according to SCMP Economy citing Reuters.
Malaysia’s national disaster management agency and meteorological department are preparing schedules for cloud seeding in shared border locations, to be coordinated with the Indonesian military. The minister, Arthur Joseph Kurup, also said Malaysia was prepared to offer help to Indonesia in extinguishing fires if requests are brought to cabinet for further action.
The governments plan to escalate firefighting and fire prevention programs in the coming weeks ahead of national holidays, including Malaysia Day celebrations in Sarawak on Sept. 16. Sarawak, which borders Indonesia’s Kalimantan province on Borneo, has been among the worst hit by haze.
Data released by Malaysia’s environment department showed six Sarawak districts recorded unhealthy air pollution index readings on Monday, with additional unhealthy readings in eight other districts across four Malaysian states.
