New Zealand retail sales fall, raising focus on Kiwi outlook

Retail sales fell 0.5% quarter-on-quarter in Q2, while retail sales excluding autos rose 0.7%.

New Zealand retail sales declined 0.5% quarter-on-quarter in Q2 2026, reversing a Q1 increase of 1.0% that was revised from 0.9%, according to data published by Statistics New Zealand.

Retail sales excluding autos rose 0.7% QoQ in Q2, down from the prior quarter’s revised 1.1% gain, with the figures pointing to uneven momentum across categories.

FXStreet notes the New Zealand dollar, the Kiwi, can react to changes in the country’s economic outlook, which is shaped by central bank policy from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

The outlet also highlights that factors including China’s economic performance and dairy prices, alongside interest-rate expectations and the NZD-US Federal Reserve rate differential, can influence NZD moves after fresh data.
