Roehampton expands esports scholarships to help cover study costs
The program has handed out more than 100 scholarships and increased the award to £2,000 after rising demand and team performance, aiming to reduce reliance on part-time work.
The University of Roehampton in the UK is offering esports scholarships to undergraduate and postgraduate students, with more than 100 awards already handed out, according to BBC Business.
The scholarships are for students who can balance academic progress with competitive esports, including participating in weekly university tournaments and representing the university at in-person events.
Roehampton requires minimum rankings in major games for eligibility, though it says it will consider applicants close to the threshold who meet other criteria, such as having large followings on streaming platforms like Twitch.
BBC Business also notes that when one former scholar, Cameron Dray, first learned of the program, the scholarship level was £1,500, before it was raised to £2,000, which he said was crucial to studying in a costly city without part-time work.
