Roehampton offers esports scholarships worth £2,000 a year
The University of Roehampton says it has already handed out more than 100 esports scholarships to students since the program began.
BBC Business reports the University of Roehampton is offering esports scholarships to undergraduate and postgraduate students, paying £2,000 per year to support students who can balance academic progress with competitive gaming.
The program is aimed at students competing in esports tournaments, which Roehampton describes as including both players and spectators, similar to traditional sports. Scholars are expected to take part in weekly university tournaments and represent the university at in person events.
Roehampton requires minimum rankings in major games but will consider applicants who are near the threshold if they meet other criteria, such as having large followings on streaming platforms like Twitch. The outlet says the scholarship amount was initially £1,500 and was raised to £2,000 as the team performed and the program grew.
BBC Business adds that former esports scholar Cameron Dray said the funding helped him study in an expensive city without needing part time work, noting that scholarship requirements were transparent during the application process. The article also cites average student debt in England of more than £47,500 after graduation and says scholarships like Roehampton’s can reduce that burden.
