Syria holds de-escalation talks with Israel in Jordan
The meeting, hosted by Jordan with US mediation, focused on limiting spillover from Israel Turkey tensions, after Israel struck the disused Abu Duhur airbase in Syria’s northwest earlier in the week.
Syria said it held talks with Israel in Jordan on Sunday aimed at de escalating tensions after recent Israeli strikes and on preventing Syria from becoming entangled in disputes between Israel and Turkey, a Damascus ally, according to Agence France-Presse.
The high level talks came after the two sides agreed in January to set up an intelligence sharing mechanism as they moved toward a security agreement, and after Israel bombed the disused Abu Duhur airbase in Syria’s northwest earlier in the week.
Syrian state news agency SANA, citing a diplomatic source at the foreign ministry, said a Syrian delegation led by the foreign minister and including intelligence chiefs met an Israeli delegation under American mediation and hosted by Jordan.
The discussions were described as efforts to support stability in Syria and the region and to bring closer viewpoints between Turkey and Israel, while ensuring current tension between the two countries is not reflected on Syrian territory.
