Thermo Fisher and Intuitive Surgical diverge on what drives their premiums
Thermo Fisher’s latest quarter pointed to a broad-based rebound in life sciences customer activity, including a return to growth in Analytical Instruments after about two years of weak demand.
Thermo Fisher and Intuitive Surgical both trade as premium healthcare stocks, but their valuations rest on different pillars, according to analysis published by Yahoo Finance. The outlet frames Thermo Fisher’s case around whether life sciences spending is moving past its post-pandemic slowdown, while it says Intuitive Surgical’s premium is supported by its business model, including highly recurring revenue from robotic surgery.
For Thermo Fisher, the analysis highlights improving customer activity across pharmaceutical and biotechnology markets and says multiple operating segments returned to healthy growth. It notes that earlier signs of improvement had been concentrated in bioprocessing, and argues the quarter showed the recovery becoming broader.
The outlet further points to strength in Thermo Fisher’s Life Sciences Solutions segment, citing year-over-year revenue growth of 13% and organic revenue up 3%. It also flags continued demand in the high-margin bioproduction business and says the recovery in Analytical Instruments was a key positive, following nearly two years of weak demand linked to slower biotechnology funding.
On Intuitive Surgical, the analysis emphasizes that the company maintains a dominant position in robotic surgery and earns its premium through factors beyond an industry recovery. It characterizes the market’s questions for each company as fundamentally different, with investors weighing which valuation case is more supported by long-term fundamentals.
