Trump set to impose 7.5% tariff on Chinese goods ahead of talks
The proposed levy would bring additional duties on China back to around 20%, and it is framed as a response to the US Supreme Court striking down some tariffs.
Bloomberg, as cited by Forexlive, reports that the US plans to impose a 7.5% tariff on Chinese goods ahead of scheduled Trump-Xi talks next month.
The move would reportedly restore Trump’s second-term duties on China to around 20%, though that level would still be consistent with what China has previously tolerated.
Forexlive notes the tariff action could be largely technical, tied to the US Supreme Court striking down some existing tariffs.
In July, Trump imposed a 12.5% tariff on Chinese goods, citing inadequate efforts to address forced labor practices, and Beijing said Washington agreed to cap any additional duties on Chinese exports at 20%.
