Trump threatens 50% tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks from Jan. 1
The threatened changes would also raise tariffs on automotive parts and steel to 50.0% starting Jan. 1, after trade talks with Canada collapsed.
The South China Morning Post reports that US President Donald Trump said he would increase tariffs on all cars and trucks from Canada to 50.0% starting January 1 next year. He also threatened to raise tariffs on automotive parts and steel to the same level, following a breakdown in trade talks between the two countries.
In a social media post, Trump argued that US production would avoid tariffs and said Canada would be treated like a state no longer. He did not provide additional details, and the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment, the report said.
The two countries failed to reach a trade deal late on Friday, with each side blaming the other. According to the report, Canada prepared to retaliate with tariffs on some US goods after Trump ordered 50.0% levies on other Canadian products.
