Ukraine seeks more air defenses as European leaders meet in Kyiv

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine is meant to receive 30.0 billion euros in European defense funding, contingent on European Parliament legislation.

Ukraine will mark its 35th anniversary of independence from the Soviet Union on August 24, the same day a coalition of European and other supporters is due to meet in Kyiv to discuss additional ways to pressure Russia to halt its invasion, OilPrice reports.

The so-called Coalition of the Willing, led by London and Paris, is an informal group of about 34 countries backing Ukraine. Some leaders are expected to attend in person while others join via video, according to OilPrice.

Ahead of the summit, Zelenskyy emphasized the urgency of securing European funding for Ukraine’s defense, especially against Russia’s ballistic missiles, and urged the European Parliament to approve legislation needed to unlock the money. OilPrice reports that Zelenskyy said Ukraine is supposed to receive 30.0 billion euros in European funding, which is tied to adoption of the relevant legislation.
