Zelensky says Ukraine will pursue peace without surrendering to Russia
He said foreign leaders in Kyiv were showing support, as leaders discussed Ukraine’s request for more air defense systems to counter Russian ballistic missiles.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said the country wants peace, but will not simply concede to Russia on any terms, during Independence Day celebrations in Kyiv, according to Reuters via SCMP Economy.
SCMP Economy said Zelensky spoke as foreign leaders gathered for Ukraine’s 35th anniversary of breaking from the Soviet Union, including Britain’s Prime Minister Andy Burnham, on his first visit to Kyiv as prime minister, and European Council President Antonio Costa.
SCMP Economy reported that Burnham was due to announce British support aimed at helping Kyiv boost domestic production of long-range missiles, and to co-chair a virtual meeting of the “Coalition of the Willing” with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The leaders were expected to discuss Ukraine’s request for additional air defense systems to stop Russian ballistic missiles pounding Ukrainian cities, as Zelensky called Russia’s actions “ballistic terror.”
