Australian dollar slips after US sanctions against Iran-linked entities
AUD/USD was last around 0.7159, with the move tied to a weaker risk backdrop after US Treasury sanctions targeting Iran-linked digital assets, technology, gold, aviation and shipping.
FXStreet reports the Australian dollar opened the week lower, falling 0.28% against the US dollar as risk appetite cooled after the US Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on Iran-linked entities.
According to FXStreet, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said sanctions target five areas, including digital assets and technology, along with gold, aviation and shipping, and he also noted a timeline for world leaders to cut ties with Iran.
FXStreet also pointed to a softer US macro backdrop, saying the Chicago Fed’s National Activity Index dipped to -0.08 from 0.06 in July and stayed near the trend level around zero through much of the year.
In Australia, FXStreet said investors will look to the Reserve Bank of Australia’s last meeting minutes, with money markets pricing only a 14% chance of an RBA rate hike on September 29, and 86% odds the central bank holds rates.
