China launches first South America archaeology project to study ancient links
The joint work will include field surveys and excavations across Peru’s Chancay-Huaral and Supe river basins, covering sites including the Sacred City of Caral and Aspero.
Chinese archaeologists are heading to South America for what is described as the first field project on the continent, aiming to find potential ancestral links between ancient Chinese and native American civilizations.
According to SCMP Economy, a joint team will begin field surveys across the basins of the Chancay-Huaral and Supe rivers, with focus sites including the Sacred City of Caral and the coastal settlement of Aspero.
The collaboration, launched under an agreement signed by national research institutions in Supe, Peru, is expected to cover field surveys and excavations, the use of advanced technologies in archaeology, heritage conservation, and researcher training.
SCMP Economy notes that the archaeological community believes Chinese and Peruvian civilizations share common ancestry despite being separated by oceans, and that Caral emerged about 5,000 years ago in present day Peru, before pottery became common in the region.
