Guy Carpenter appoints medical malpractice reinsurance specialist

Guy Carpenter has appointed Jessica Ciak as senior vice president in its Healthcare Segment, tasking her with focusing on the US medical professional liability reinsurance market. Ciak is based in Minneapolis and reports to Martha Jacobs, the segment leader.
The broker said the appointment reflects pressure in the malpractice insurance market, where clients are dealing with record-setting verdicts, evolving plaintiff-friendly legislation, and reinsurance capacity constraints. Guy Carpenter CEO for North America and global chief broking officer John Trace said Ciak brings more than 25 years of treaty reinsurance placement experience, including specialty focus on medical professional liability.
WTW analysis cited in the article shows severity has accelerated, with the average of the top 50 medical malpractice verdicts rising from $32 million in 2022 to $56 million in 2024, up 75.0% in two years, and with at least two individual verdicts exceeding $100 million by January 2026.
The report also points to market pricing and structure changes driven by aggregation risk, including reinsurers reassessing how much they are willing to carry across a carrier book. WTW found some established carriers have cut available limits from as much as $15 million down to $5 million or less in parts of the market, and insurers have responded with sub-limits, higher deductibles, extended retroactive dates, and new exclusions, supporting growth in the standalone excess market.
