Human Rights Foundation backs 16 Bitcoin Development Fund projects

The HRF said the new grants total 500 million satoshis, worth about $396,854 at current prices, and are aimed at improving secure access and cross-border payments.

The Human Rights Foundation has announced 500 million satoshis in new grants through its Bitcoin Development Fund to support 16 projects in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, according to Bitcoin Magazine. The outlet says the funding is worth about $396,854 at today’s prices.

HRF said the grants are intended to strengthen the Bitcoin protocol, expand practical Bitcoin access, and support secure messaging and community infrastructure for dissidents. The NGO framed the effort as reinforcing Bitcoin’s role as a tool for financial freedom, including for journalists, nonprofit organizations, and activists to communicate and organize more securely using Bitcoin, the article adds.

Bitcoin Magazine highlighted examples of funded use cases, including BitSpenda, a mobile money to bitcoin bridge. The project uses a non-custodial, account-free approach to let users in Nigeria, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, and Ghana send bitcoin from a Lightning wallet directly to mobile money accounts received in local currency, and it plans to expand payment tools to make cross-border transfers faster and cheaper.

In the Caribbean, the article says Project Island Resilience builds on Flash, a Bitcoin and Lightning wallet created by Jamaican developer Dread. It adds that after Hurricane Melissa devastated Jamaica in late 2025, the app raised and distributed more than $10,000 in bitcoin within 72 hours, and the next phase plans offline payments using Bluetooth, NFC, and ecash, with HRF backing to help build that infrastructure further.
