Japan FM Katayama offers broad FY27 growth and fiscal balance stance
USD/JPY was last near 159.30 after Katayama declined to provide further details on Fiscal 2027 budget items.
Japan Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said the government’s approach for the FY27 budget aims to balance fiscal sustainability with economic growth, and to communicate that stance to markets, according to FXStreet. In the Asian trading session, Katayama did not provide additional budget specifics.
FXStreet reports that Katayama refused to comment on budget requests for Fiscal 2027 and said the government has received various opinions on plans for Japan government bonds held by retail investors. The minister also said tax reform requests for retail-targeted JGBs are likely to be considered, with discussions planned with relevant parties.
The remarks also included that the government hopes for early opening of the Strait of Hormuz and will respond properly to Iran-US peace talks, weighing potential impact on the international community, FXStreet said.
FXStreet noted there was no major reaction in the Japanese yen after the comments, with USD/JPY trading about 0.13% higher near 159.30. The outlet also reiterated that the yen’s value is influenced by factors including Bank of Japan policy and the interest-rate differential between Japan and the United States, among others.
