South Korea and US coordinate to revive talks with North Korea

South Korea and the United States said they will maintain close coordination to help revive dialogue with North Korea, days after Pyongyang rebuffed President Donald Trump’s overtures and launched a barrage of short-range ballistic missiles, according to SCMP Economy.

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun told US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a phone call late on Monday that Seoul would work to ensure Trump’s messages lead to renewed US-North Korea discussions and progress toward peace on the Korean peninsula, the South Korea Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

The Reuters story, carried by SCMP Economy, notes the timing reflects a period of tension between the allies, after Trump announced a scaling back of joint military exercises and praised nuclear-armed North Korea.

While the US State Department said Rubio and Cho discussed a range of issues in the US-ROK alliance, the South Korean statement did not say whether the two diplomats reaffirmed their usual commitment to North Korea’s denuclearisation, despite emphasizing cooperation on the nuclear issue.
