UK leaders plan September US trip to press for Ukraine Patriot missiles
Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the trip would be aimed at enabling Ukraine to access some Patriot air defense stocks ahead of winter, when Russia is expected to increase attacks on energy infrastructure.
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he plans to travel to the United States next month, with other European leaders, to lobby President Donald Trump on Ukraine’s request for access to some of its Patriot air defense missile stocks before winter.
Burnham said it would likely be his first trip to the US since taking office, adding that he is still finalizing details but expects to go after discussions following his remarks. He referenced New York in September in connection with the UN General Assembly meeting.
According to SCMP Economy, Burnham’s comments came after his first international visit since becoming prime minister, including chairing a meeting of Ukraine’s allies and holding a bilateral meeting with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Zelensky has repeatedly urged European nations and the US to help Ukraine obtain Patriot missile interceptors and replenish stocks in time for winter, when Russia is expected to step up attacks on energy infrastructure. Burnham said he left “really optimistic” that Ukraine’s current defense challenges, linked to a low interceptor stockpile, are “fixable.”
