US delists Syria from state sponsor of terrorism list
The State Department also revoked its global terrorist designation for al-Nusrah Front, citing Syria’s steps to distance itself from international terrorism.
The United States on Monday removed Syria from its state sponsor of terrorism list, undoing a decades old designation that had constrained investment, according to SCMP Economy citing the US State Department action.
The State Department also revoked its designation of al-Nusrah Front, also known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, as a global terrorist organization, leaving Cuba, Iran and North Korea as the remaining US designated state sponsors of terrorism.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the removals were taken in recognition of positive actions and further commitments by the Syrian government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa to fully distance Syria from acts of international terrorism.
The State Department said the change to restrictions on Syria does not affect the Treasury Department’s posture on countering global terrorism or its commitment to hold perpetrators in Syria accountable.
