Argentina grain river transport hits five-year high in 2025
Cabotage shipments totaled 805,805 tonnes in 2025, up 18% from 2024 and 27% above the five-year average, the Rosario Board of Trade said.
River transportation of grain in Argentina reached its highest volume in five years, according to data cited by the Rosario Board of Trade (BCR). Terminals along the Paraná River Waterway shipped 805,805 tonnes of grain via cabotage in 2025, rising 18% from 2024, and marking a second straight year of expansion.
The report said the waterway system supports Argentina’s grain competitiveness because barges can move cargo at lower cost than trucks or trains. It also noted that 2025 grain cabotage delivered the best performance since 2020, and that the 2025 figure ran 27% above the average of the prior five years.
BCR data showed most of the activity came from Entre Ríos province, where terminals shipped 718,301 tonnes in 2025, up 20% year over year and representing 89% of the national total. In Santa Fe, shipments more than doubled from 43,668 to 87,504 tonnes, accounting for the remaining 11% and extending grain shipments for a fourth consecutive year.
At the terminal level, Cargill in Diamante led with 305,790 tonnes shipped, 8.5% higher than in 2024. The largest year-on-year increase was recorded by the La Paz Agricultural Cooperative, which raised shipments from 171,883 to 279,756 tonnes, a 63% gain, the BCR report said.
