Bill Gates urges protection of “human reserved” jobs from AI
Gates also argued governments are not prepared for AI’s scale of impact, saying institutions must design a new “architecture” to manage it.
Bill Gates, Microsoft co-founder, called for creating “human reserved” job domains to ensure certain roles are preserved as AI and robots advance.
In a 6,000-word essay titled “The turbulent AI era is here,” Gates said many jobs will disappear forever, but that societies can set aside specific tasks for people to do. He likened the concept to nature reserves, where some areas are protected from development because the loss would be too great, and warned against replacing inherently human responsibilities.
Gates cited examples including health professionals who cared for his father, who died of Alzheimer’s disease, arguing that element of care was “irreplaceably human” and that no robot should deliver certain kinds of news.
He also said it is fair to wonder whether the world’s institutions are up to the task of designing and implementing the needed new approach, adding that governments are not prepared for the technology’s impact. The essay is described as one of Gates’s first major public interventions since the Jeffrey Epstein controversy involving the Gates Foundation.
