Bitcoin miners pivot compute power to AI infrastructure
The shift includes long-term compute arrangements, such as Riot Platforms’ $9bn, 20-year deal with Anthropic.
Bitcoin mining companies are increasingly repurposing the data-center computing power they built for crypto as the industry pivots toward artificial intelligence infrastructure, according to BBC Business.
The outlet notes that while Bitcoin has rallied to around $80,000 in August, it remains well below its October 2025 peak of about $124,000 after earlier slumped rewards following the value drop from that high.
Because Bitcoin relies on distributed networks of computers to verify transactions and issue new coins, miners say they have transferable experience in running large-scale data centers efficiently, particularly where electricity is relatively cheap.
BBC Business says several miners have diverted investment and infrastructure toward AI, including Riot Platforms signing a $9bn, 20-year compute deal with Anthropic, and Enegix planning to gradually realign energy and infrastructure capabilities in Kazakhstan toward AI, with discussions underway with AI and HPC firms.
