Cardano vote faces Sept. 1 risk of governance bottleneck

With support still below required thresholds for both DReps and stake pool operators, CardanoScan data showed DRep support at 41.7% versus a 67% bar and SPO support at 12.0% versus a 51% bar as of Aug. 25.

Cardano’s final-week vote to seat four elected Constitutional Committee members is at risk of timing out on Sept. 1, which could leave the committee undersized and unable to ratify certain governance actions. According to CryptoSlate, failure would reduce active committee seats from seven to three, two fewer than the committee’s minimum.

CryptoSlate reported that a live CardanoScan reading on Aug. 25 showed delegated representative, or DRep, support at 41.7% against the 67% threshold, while stake pool operator, or SPO, support was 12.0% versus the 51% required. Intersect points to the Sept. 1 expiry as epoch 653, and the action needs both groups to clear their respective bars before that deadline.

The outlet said prior snapshots showed support also lagging, though rising, including CryptoSlate’s Aug. 17 GovTool snapshot with DRep support at 32.46% and SPO support at 1.95%. CryptoSlate also noted that later readings may not be directly comparable because Cardano’s governance uses role-specific active-stake calculations, making the DRep and SPO measurements best treated as separate baselines.

Under CIP-1694, an undersized committee cannot ratify governance actions that require committee approval, creating a governance bottleneck. CryptoSlate added that even if the vote times out, Cardano’s operating network would continue to produce blocks and process transactions, though paths to restore governance would remain available.
