Emergency medical evacuation insurance can cover costly air ambulance rides

U.S. CDC estimates international air ambulance costs range from $30,000 to $250,000, making medevac coverage a key protection for trips abroad.

Emergency medical evacuation insurance, also called medevac coverage, is designed to help pay for and coordinate transportation if a traveler becomes seriously ill or injured during a trip, particularly when local facilities cannot adequately treat them. The coverage can include getting moved to an appropriate medical facility and, once a person is stable, arranging return transportation back to the U.S., depending on the plan, according to Yahoo Finance.

The article distinguishes medevac coverage from other travel insurance benefits that can be bundled in the same policy. It explains that trip cancellation reimburses prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs for covered reasons, travel medical insurance helps pay for healthcare costs during the trip, and repatriation of remains may be included or separate.

It also notes that travelers often assume their regular health insurance or a premium credit card will cover emergency medical transportation abroad, but that is usually not the case. The piece says most U.S. health insurance plans provide limited coverage outside the country, and Medicare generally does not cover care outside the U.S., except in very narrow situations, such as when someone is on a cruise ship less than six hours from a U.S. port.
