Flash flood in Nepal damages roads, bridges and power projects near Tibet

A massive flash flood in Nepal has washed away villages while damaging roads, bridges and power projects in Rasuwa district, near the country’s border with Tibet, authorities said Wednesday, warning that casualties were possible.

Reuters reported the hardest hit areas were Syapru Besi and Timure, where officials said about 50,000 people live, and urged residents along the Bhotekoshi River to seek higher ground as torrents swept through mountain valleys.

Nepal police spokesman Abi Narayan Kafle said authorities did not yet know the full extent of damage, but said the flood was large enough to have affected many settlements. He added that police had alerted people near riversides and deployed all available resources.

According to the district administrator Narendra Pariyar, there were reports that villages and infrastructure project sites had been washed away, but there were no immediate estimates for casualties or property losses.
