Hong Kong lawmaker urges firms to expand beyond Western markets

He linked the push to uncertainty over a US pause on immigrant-visa appointments and said businesses are watching whether it will affect business-visa approvals.

Hong Kong lawmaker Jonathan Lamport urged companies in the city to accelerate expansion into the Middle East, the Asean bloc and Central Asia, arguing that it can reduce exposure to geopolitical risk.

Writing in the South China Morning Post, Lamport said the wider uncertainty around US immigration procedures reinforced the need for firms to diversify their overseas presence beyond traditional Western markets.

Lamport added that the local commercial sector is monitoring whether the US disruption will affect the processing and approval of business visas.

The push comes as the US pause, first reported by the Financial Times, affects appointments for immigrant visas that allow recipients to live permanently in the United States, rather than temporary business or tourist visas under non-immigrant categories.
