Japan to reuse more Fukushima decontamination soil at branch offices
The plan expands reuse beyond Tokyo to the first sites outside the capital, with about 14.5 million cubic metres of removed soil already stored near the Fukushima Daiichi complex as of end-July.
Japan’s Environment Ministry plans to reuse soil collected during decontamination work near the disaster-stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex at national government branch offices in Miyagi and Saitama prefectures.
According to SCMP, the government has already reused the soil at 12 sites in Tokyo since July last year, including facilities in the Kasumigaseki district such as the prime minister’s office.
Excluding demonstration projects in Fukushima prefecture, the expansion to the cities of Sendai and Saitama will be the first reuse of the soil outside Tokyo, and the government aims to extend reuse to other branch offices nationwide to reduce the total volume requiring disposal.
As of the end of July, about 14.46 million cubic metres of removed soil and other waste had been placed at an interim storage facility near the nuclear complex, SCMP reported.
