North Korea escalates anti-Japan rhetoric amid deeper Russia ties

State media has published more than a dozen denunciations since early July, as analysts link the shift to Pyongyang’s growing alignment with Moscow and Beijing.

North Korea has sharply increased its verbal attacks on Japan, issuing more than a dozen denunciations through state media since early July and hardening its wording in recent days, accusing Tokyo of driving a “neo-militarist frenzy” and preparing for a “war of aggression,” according to the South China Morning Post.

Analysts cited by the outlet said the move reflects renewed confidence tied to deepening security and economic ties with Russia, as well as an effort to frame Asia-Pacific geopolitics as a contest between rival blocs.

The escalation comes alongside broader regional strain, with North Korea reportedly forging closer ties with Russia, China increasingly at odds with Japan, and Japan moving to strengthen its defense posture in response to threats perceived from those three.

While a formal allied bloc is seen as unlikely in the near term, analysts said Pyongyang may keep launching provocations aimed at unsettling Tokyo.
