London robotaxi rollout pushed back as TfL guidance still not set

Uber and Wayve face delays because Transport for London has not published application guidance, with the transit authority saying it will not be accepting proposals “for some time” after earlier hopes for a summer start.

The rollout of robotaxis in London is unlikely to begin this year, after regulatory and technical hurdles pushed back the UK government and operators’ timeline, according to the Guardian Business.

Uber and London-based Wayve, which were granted early minicab licences that require a human safety driver, had previously indicated trips would start later this summer before a full public launch.

In 2025, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander accelerated plans for fully driverless taxi trials, moving the start to spring of this year, but progress has slowed as Transport for London still has not published the guidance companies need to follow to win approval.

Transport for London’s director of strategy, Christina Calderato, told the London assembly’s transport committee the authority would not be in a position to start accepting applications “for some time,” while saying there is significant work happening behind the scenes; Uber and Wayve also said more than 100,000 Londoners are on their waiting list for self-driving taxis.
