MultiversX Supernova decouples consensus from execution on testnet

The Supernova upgrade lets validators vote on blocks before executing transactions, with execution running asynchronously in the background.

MultiversX has introduced its Supernova protocol upgrade on testnet, aiming to address scaling bottlenecks by separating consensus from transaction execution, according to Cointelegraph.

In a conventional synchronous model, validators typically need to execute the transactions in a proposed block to confirm the resulting state transitions, which can make execution speed a shared bottleneck for the whole network.

Cointelegraph reports that Supernova changes the workflow by having a proposer select transactions and propose a block without executing them first, while validators verify the proposal follows protocol rules and can vote immediately.

The outlet says execution continues asynchronously after the vote, allowing the network to reach agreement on blocks before processing their transactions, with the upgrade presented as a next step to move execution off the consensus critical path.
