New rules cap branded school items to help cut back-to-school costs

Research cited by BBC Business found almost half of parents worry about uniform costs, and a third of those surveyed reported giving up personal spending to pay for items like bags and books.

Back-to-school costs are a growing concern for families as new rules limiting the number of items that can carry a school logo come into force in September, aimed at easing the financial burden.

BBC Business reports that research by Save the Children and the Baby Bank Alliance found almost half of parents said they are worried about the cost of school uniforms, and one third of 2,000 parents polled said they have sacrificed things for themselves to cover back-to-school expenses such as uniforms, bags, or books.

The article notes that Save the Children described the uniform branding limits as a “good start,” while still warning that costs remain an issue for families across income brackets. It also points parents toward options such as uniform hubs, swap shops, sales ahead of term start, and hardship funds.

BBC Business adds examples of local support, including the School Uniform Reuse Network in London, which said it helped reuse more than 1,500 items across 24 schools in its first term, and the Baby Bank Alliance’s network of around 400 support hubs that provide uniforms for children through secondary school.
