New rules limit school logo items to help cut uniform costs
Back-to-school cost worries affect almost half of parents, while Save the Children says the uniform branding changes are only a first step.
Back-to-school spending pressures are mounting for families in England, with Save the Children and the Baby Bank Alliance reporting that almost half of parents worry about the cost of school uniforms. In a poll of 2,000 parents, a third said they have given up personal spending to cover items such as uniforms, bags, or books, BBC Business reports.
New rules limiting the number of items branded with a school logo to three per child are set to come into force in September. Save the Children said the change is a positive step, but it added that uniform costs remain a concern for families across nearly all income brackets.
Schools and charities are pointing families to support, including uniform hubs, swap shops, and hardship funds ahead of term start. BBC Business notes that in London, the School Uniform Reuse Network, launched earlier this year, helped reuse more than 1,500 items across 24 schools in its first term.
Charities that provide practical assistance are also highlighting year-round help. The Baby Bank Alliance says its network includes 400 support hubs across the UK that can provide uniforms through secondary school, and Little Stars Shrewsbury said just over half of the children it supported since June received uniform help before term began.
