Norway starts Troll Phase 3 gas production ahead of schedule

The second stage of Troll Phase 3 began on August 22, bringing forward 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas without increasing the field’s recoverable resources.

Norway has started production from the second stage of the Troll Phase 3 development, accelerating natural gas deliveries to Europe from an existing major supply source, according to OilPrice citing Equinor.

The project is set to ramp up 55 billion cubic meters of gas from the Troll West reservoir. Production began on August 22, several months earlier than planned, and the work cost tens of millions of dollars less than an original estimate of about $1.2 billion, the outlet reported.

OilPrice said the development does not increase the Troll field’s recoverable resources. Instead, it brings existing reserves forward, helping sustain output through Troll A and the Kollsnes processing plant as production from other mature Norwegian fields declines.

The 55 billion cubic meters is described as equivalent to almost two years of French gas demand. OilPrice also cited Norway’s Offshore Directorate saying the development could accelerate up to 7 billion cubic meters in a single year, roughly 6% of Norway’s recent annual gas exports.
