Rigetti and IonQ diverge as investors bet on scalable quantum systems

Rigetti reported second-quarter revenue up 183% year-over-year to $5.1 million, with gross margin improving to about 43% despite a $16 million adjusted net loss.

In a long-term look at quantum computing stocks, Yahoo Finance contrasts IonQ and Rigetti, noting that investors are effectively choosing which company can scale its technology, translate research into commercially useful systems, and maintain enough financial runway to reach that stage.

Rigetti, valued at $5.9 billion by market capitalization, builds superconducting quantum computers using chiplet architecture that connects smaller quantum chips rather than attempting a single large quantum chip. The article says RGTI shares have risen more than 1,800% over the past two years, though enthusiasm has cooled with the stock down 19% year-to-date.

On product and performance, the piece highlights Rigetti’s Cepheus-1-108Q, a 108-qubit system built from 12 interconnected 9-qubit chiplets, and says the company claims it is among a small group to have produced gate-based systems with more than 100 qubits. In the second quarter, revenue grew 183% year-over-year to $5.1 million, gross margin improved to about 43%, and the company posted an adjusted net loss of $16 million.

Looking ahead, Yahoo Finance reports that management expects its approach to support scalability and speed toward 1,000 qubits and beyond in roughly three years, but says progress depends on continued spending for dilution refrigeration, Fab-1 manufacturing infrastructure, and partnerships.
