South Korea scrambles jets after Russian aircraft enter its air zone
The incursion occurred over the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan, and follows a second similar episode in weeks.
South Korea said it scrambled fighter jets after multiple Russian military aircraft entered and then left its air defence identification zone over the East Sea, also called the Sea of Japan, on Wednesday, marking a second such incursion in weeks, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet notes South Korea’s defence ministry said the aircraft were detected before they entered the zone and that Air Force fighter jets were deployed to prepare for any contingency, without providing further details.
An air defence identification zone is described as a buffer area rather than sovereign airspace, where foreign aircraft must identify themselves for security purposes, SCMP Economy added.
The report also links the deteriorating ties between Seoul and Moscow to South Korea joining Western sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and to Moscow strengthening cooperation with North Korea.
