US critical minerals proposals to Brazil stalled as rare earth push lags

A senior US diplomat said Washington may have to wait until Brazil’s October election to secure bilateral critical minerals cooperation.

The US has not received responses to two proposals from Washington to formalise critical minerals cooperation with Brazil, a senior US diplomat said at Latin America’s largest mining fair, leaving the US without a bilateral deal as it works to build rare earth supply chains outside China. According to SCMP Economy, Matthew Lowe, economic counsellor at the US embassy in Brasilia, made the comment Tuesday in Belo Horizonte.

Lowe said the situation could require waiting until after Brazil’s election in October, adding that Washington’s efforts to secure agreements are being held up in Brasilia. He also referenced the Minerals Security partnership effort that the US invited Brazil to join years earlier.

At Exposibram, officials from countries including France, Canada, Australia and Britain discussed plans to loosen China’s grip on mineral processing, without naming China during the session, the outlet said. The US, SCMP Economy reported, has found it difficult to obtain similar agreements with Brazil compared with other governments that have already signed.
