US Treasury launches quantum-readiness task force with crypto workstream

The task force is creating a public-private forum for crypto custodians to coordinate on migrating to quantum-safe technology, without setting deadlines for Bitcoin or Ethereum.

The US Treasury has brought digital assets into its preparations for quantum computing threats by launching a Quantum-Readiness Task Force, which includes a dedicated workstream for crypto and emerging-technology risks. The initiative, launched Aug. 24, also features tracks focused on post-quantum cryptography adoption more broadly and on third-party vendor readiness, according to CryptoSlate.

Crypto custodians and infrastructure providers will be able to coordinate through a government-industry forum to identify critical cryptographic dependencies, improve interoperability, and work through implementation challenges as existing encryption becomes vulnerable to more powerful quantum computers.

The Treasury did not impose a migration deadline on Bitcoin, Ethereum, or other private digital-asset companies. CryptoSlate also notes that any changes to blockchain signature systems would still require separate engineering and governance decisions within individual networks, rather than a single government-driven deadline.

The effort follows President Donald Trump’s June executive order that accelerates the federal government’s own transition, calling for post-quantum key establishment for selected high-value, high-impact federal systems by Dec. 31, 2030, and post-quantum digital signatures by Dec. 31, 2031. CryptoSlate adds that parts of the industry have already been planning for the threat, including Coinbase’s quantum advisory council and other industry efforts mentioned in the report.
