Zerohash refiles for an OCC trust bank charter after prior return

The OCC has reopened public comment on the new, narrower application, which runs until September 17.

Crypto infrastructure firm Zerohash is back in the U.S. banking charter process with a revised trust bank application submitted to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, according to CoinDesk.

The OCC had formally returned Zerohash’s first application last month, signaling material deficiencies. Zerohash said it is starting a second round quickly with a “significantly narrower focus,” aiming for a more focused approval of national trust activities aligned with its intended rollout timeline.

The new application is now under OCC review, and a public comment period is open until September 17. CoinDesk reported that other crypto-native firms have received preliminary trust charters recently, while two were denied, and Zerohash’s application is the only one returned.

Zerohash already operates as a state-chartered trust bank and provides crypto infrastructure for several major financial firms, including Franklin Templeton, Stripe, Interactive Brokers, and DraftKings. CoinDesk also noted the company is involved in a California wrongful termination lawsuit where its former chief compliance officer alleges he was fired after uncovering compliance problems, and neither Zerohash nor the OCC responded to requests for comment on the new effort.
