Bithumb court orders user to return proceeds from fat-finger BTC error

The ruling said the defendant must repay about 194 million won, tied to bitcoin mistakenly credited in February as part of a promotional giveaway.

Bithumb has won a second civil case tied to a February fat-finger incident in which the exchange mistakenly credited 620,000 BTC internally to hundreds of users as part of a promotional campaign, according to The Block.

A South Korean court ruled in Bithumb’s favor, ordering a defendant in one of four unjust enrichment lawsuits to return proceeds from selling the bitcoin that had been erroneously credited, with the case involving roughly 194 million Korean won, or $140,513.

The error temporarily drove the BTC-KRW trading pair lower by about 15% on the platform, and it prompted authorities to investigate Bithumb over what they cited as a lack of internal controls and risk management.

Bithumb, which is targeting an initial public offering in 2028, has now secured two wins out of the four related civil lawsuits stemming from the same incident.
