Coinbase and Better Mortgage roll out Bitcoin-backed mortgages

The program is structured around Fannie Mae rules and offers Coinbase One members a 1% mortgage-value rebate, capped at $10,000.

Coinbase and Nasdaq-listed Better Mortgage said they have rolled out general availability of Bitcoin-backed mortgages for Americans, building on an initial Bitcoin-backed loan launched in June.

The companies said the service is designed in accordance with the Federal National Mortgage Association, or Fannie Mae, and was intended to help younger first-time homebuyers who hold Bitcoin. In June, Coinbase and Better funded their first Bitcoin-backed mortgage, which a married Michigan couple used to put Bitcoin up as collateral for their down payment rather than liquidating their holdings.

Coinbase and Better Mortgage also said Coinbase One members will be eligible for a rebate equal to 1% of the mortgage value, up to a maximum of $10,000. Better Mortgage Chief Technology Officer Ziggy Jonsson said higher interest rates, record home prices, and limited inventory pushed the median age of first-time homebuyers to 40 in 2025.

The companies framed Bitcoin-backed lending as still niche, while pointing to prior industry research. Ledn has released research claiming the market could expand from its current size of $3 billion to $1 trillion over the next 10 years, and Milo previously said it surpassed $100 million in digital asset mortgages, including a record $12 million loan.
