Colombia considers prison ships to detain highly dangerous criminals at sea

Colombia’s new hard-right government is considering using prison ships adrift at sea to detain people it deems highly dangerous criminals, according to a defense ministry source cited by SCMP Economy.

President Abelardo de la Espriella, who took office earlier this month, raised the proposal during a security council meeting, as his administration moves to crack down on armed groups in a country described as the world’s largest cocaine producer.

The plan follows his campaign pledge to bomb guerrillas and build so-called mega prisons modeled after the approach of El Salvador’s leader, Nayib Bukele.

Under the proposal, the Colombian Navy would be responsible for carrying the project forward, with the ships intended to prevent escapes and limit detainees’ contact with both dangerous individuals and the rest of the world.
