Core Lightning urges node operators to take nodes offline

The project said it will not support earlier Core Lightning releases, including 26.04, until a later point release is published, with details held under a two-week embargo.

Core Lightning maintainers told node operators to take their nodes offline unless they upgrade to a release that has not yet been published, leaving shutdown as the only available action for operators who do not update.

The warning, circulated in a Core Lightning Discord and reproduced on stacker.news, said the team plans to publish binaries carrying fixes for multiple reported vulnerabilities while keeping details of what they fix under a two-week embargo, with the binaries accompanied by the team’s signatures confirming reproducibility.

The message said operators who do not upgrade should run their nodes offline because of known risks, and it added that the team will not support previous releases, including 26.04. It also said the scheduled 26.09 release remains planned for late September, and that neither the binaries nor an advisory had appeared as of Wednesday afternoon.

Core Lightning, maintained by Blockstream with outside contributors, runs a share of the Lightning network that totaled 375,019,291,916 sats, about 3,750 BTC, across 33,101 channels and 16,420 nodes as of an Aug. 20 snapshot, according to mempool.space. The Defiant reports the warning was later confirmed by a Bitcoin Core contributor, and Core Lightning’s security advisories page listed no items at the time.
