Japan to probe animal cafes over hygiene and animal welfare concerns

Japan’s environment ministry will start a fact-finding survey as early as next month, beginning with counts of establishments and the animals they keep.

Japan will launch a fact-finding survey into animal cafes after concerns were raised about hygiene and animal welfare, according to authorities cited by SCMP Economy. The environment ministry says the probe follows recommendations from an expert panel on animal welfare.

The survey is expected to begin as early as next month and will first collect basic information, including how many animal cafe establishments operate and what animals they keep, an environment ministry official said. The ministry also plans to assess whether facilities comply with relevant laws under Japan’s animal welfare framework.

Officials said the review will include checks on whether animals have enough space and how often cleaning is carried out. If the ministry identifies facilities that appear to be violating rules, it may proceed to on-site inspections, the official added.
