Kazakhstan election advances constitutional reforms tied to trade

Kazakhstan held a parliamentary election on August 23 that completed the rollout of updated government structures under a constitution that took effect in July, a political shift that could influence how the country engages in global trade, according to OilPrice.

The new unicameral legislature, the Kurultai, is expected to break with past practices by improving accountability and transparency, as well as streamlining the political representation system and making legislation more efficient.

OilPrice reports that Adilet, the pro-presidential party, won just over 71% of the vote, while four other parties will also have seats, and turnout was 74%.

The outlet adds that the institutional changes coincide with a new phase in Kazakhstan’s foreign policy engagement with key partners, including the United States, with the reforms potentially supporting a more structured and predictable political and legal environment for long term cooperation.
