Rayonier and PotlatchDeltic combine to create a larger timberland REIT

The merger adds about 4.1 million acres of timberland to the combined portfolio, with about 3.2 million acres in the U.S. South and about 900,000 acres in the Pacific Northwest.

Nareit reports that Rayonier Inc.’s merger with PotlatchDeltic, completed in January, formed a larger timberland REIT designed to unlock value beyond traditional timber harvesting.

The combined company now owns about 4.1 million acres of timberland, including roughly 3.2 million acres in the U.S. South and about 900,000 acres in the Pacific Northwest.

The outlet says the deal follows a long consolidation trend in U.S. timber REITs, leaving Rayonier as one of just two remaining North American timberland REITs.

Rayonier CEO Mark McHugh said the transaction focused on strategic flexibility, framing it as a “one-plus-one-equals-three” opportunity intended to strengthen competition over the long term.
