Scandium Canada returns assays up to 315 ppm at Crater Lake

Drill results from the TG zone include 65.4 metres averaging 175 ppm scandium oxide (Sc2O3), as the company prepares a resource update and a follow-on economic study.

Scandium Canada is reporting new drill assays from its Crater Lake scandium project in northern Quebec, part of work aimed at updating the project’s resources and economics. The TG zone results include a drill interval of 13.4 metres grading 315 parts per million scandium, returned from 32.7 metres depth in hole CLB26070, the company said Wednesday.

According to Mining.com, the same hole also included 65.4 metres at 175 ppm Sc2O3 starting at 122 metres downhole, plus 7.2 metres grading 316 ppm Sc2O3 from 122 metres. Crater Lake sits in the Nunavik region, about 1,290 km northeast of Montreal.

Mining.com reports that the TG zone was previously estimated at 16.3 million indicated tonnes grading 277.9 grams scandium per tonne and 20.9 million inferred tonnes grading 271.7 grams scandium per tonne. Scandium Canada said it is working on a resource update this year and a later economic study, with a preliminary economic assessment intended to use updated resources, process optimization, and revised infrastructure assumptions as a basis for evaluating project economics and engaging potential strategic partners.

In addition to the resource work, the company said it has decided a scandium oxide plant should be built in the Schefferville region of Quebec, about 200 km southwest of Crater Lake, ideally at a brownfield site. Mining.com also noted that scandium is classified by the Canadian government as a critical metal, used mainly in aluminum alloys, fuel cells, and high-intensity lighting.
