Iron ore prices swing from $13 a tonne to near $91 this month

Mining.com says the interactive timeline tracks iron ore, with the latest month closing around $91 and production risks from a strike expected to be felt in November.

Mining.com’s interactive history charts how iron ore evolved from roughly $13 a tonne in 2002, under annual contract talks between Brazilian and Australian miners and Japanese steelmakers, into the second most traded commodity after crude oil. The outlet says iron ore is now priced daily via futures exchanges in Singapore and Dalian.

The timeline tracks major inflection points along a single price line, including a drop to about $37 in December 2015 and a peak at $237.57 in May 2021, with the commodity closing this month near $91.

Mining.com also highlights the stakes of disruptions, saying the full impact of a strike is expected in November, when production could fall by half, according to unions.
